The dougong bracket set is the most iconic structural element of Chinese timber architecture. Composed of dou (square bearing blocks), gong (curved cross-arms), and ang (inclined cantilever arms), it transfers roof loads from the roof frame to the column head while creating the characteristic rhythmic ornament of the eave zone. The number of cantilever steps (tiaos) determines the eave depth and the building's hierarchical rank. The section drawing reveals the stacking sequence and mortise-tenon joint details; the elevation shows the bracket rhythm at column-head and inter-column positions.

The column base (zhuzhu) is the stone transition element between the timber column and the platform, preventing moisture damage to the column foot while providing visual stability. Forms range from plain square or circular pads to elaborate drum, lotus, and inverted-bowl profiles — the higher the building's rank, the richer the carving. The stone drum (baogushi) flanks the gate column, providing structural stability and a surface for carved ornament (lions, cloud scrolls, lotus). The section shows the base height, diameter, and platform relationship; the elevation reveals the carving composition and relief depth.

The Sumeru throne (xumizuo) derives from Buddhist altar base forms and is widely used as the platform base for palaces, temples, memorial arches, and important buildings. Its section is composed of stacked moulding layers — upper fang, upper xiao, waist (shuyao), lower xiao, lower fang, and guijiao — creating a rich horizontal stratification. The waist zone is carved with arched niches (humen), warrior figures, and floral ornament; the xiao zones feature lotus petal mouldings. The section shows the moulding proportions and carving depths; the elevation reveals the niche rhythm and decorative pattern.

The mortise-tenon joint (sunmao) is the core connection technology of Chinese timber architecture — no nails or metal fasteners, relying entirely on geometric interlocking to transfer forces. Common types include the dovetail tenon (for lateral member connections), through tenon, half tenon, column-foot tenon, and the bawangquan (beam-column junction). The exploded view shows the relative positions and tenon profiles before assembly; the section reveals the force transfer path after assembly. Precision is critical — tolerances are typically within 0.5mm, making this the core technical challenge of traditional carpentry.
